Which Tool Steel is best for Molds?

H13 is widely used for molds due to heat resistance, toughness, and long service life.

Can hardened tool steel be machined?

Yes. Hardened tool steels are commonly machined using EDM, grinding, and specialized carbide tooling.

      Process of Tool Steel Machining

So, here is a step-by-step process for tool steel machining:

      Process of Tool Steel Machining

      Material Preparation

Our starting material is either raw billets, blocks, or pre-hardened tool steel, and we check spec conformity by material certificates and hardness tests.

      Fixturing and Programming

CAD/CAM teams read your file, noting areas of difficulty with access, tolerance, and positions of fixtures. Once rigid workholding, deflection, and vibration are reduced.

      Roughing & Semi-Finishing

Our carbide and PCD tooling is applied to cut bulk material through optimized chip control, coolant flow and volume, and heat-controlled tool paths.

      Finishing Passes

Last finishes are done with minimal stepover and spindle RPM, and generate <=16 Ra surface or enhance it. 5-axis live-tool centers provide an even better surface finish.

      Secondary Processes

When the geometry is complex, we have EDM (sinker/wire) to reach features that are difficult to reach, grinding, welding, and first-resistance checking.

      Inspection

Each of the parts is inspected using CMM and provided with First Article Reports (FAR) or AS9102 forms as needed.

      Post-Machining Treatments

Components are washed, plated, heat-treated (where not already), and prepared (dressed) to be assembled or dispatched.

5 Ways to Minimize Costs In Tool Steel Machining

Try to follow these tips to cut the cost of tool steel machining.

            • Always go with the best grade for your needs and don’t choose extra strong material. Employ materials that are economical and safe for the task you intend to do.
            • Choose simple designs with shallow pockets to minimize how much time it takes to machine a part.
            • Purchase meals in bulk – This will help you save a lot on per-unit prices.
            • Take advantage of Near-Net Shapes – Since less material and machining is needed with Near-Net forms.
            • Reduce Costs by EDM, Grinding, and welding all in the same place, i.e., TOPS instead of outsourcing.

                  Challenges in Machining Tool Steel

We have the following challenges while performing machining on tool steel:

                  • It is difficult to cut materials with a brittle and hard mineral, because it quickly wears out the tools.
                  • Must use carbide or coated tools since the product wears down quickly.
                  • Machine operations take longer and require more tools, which increases the costs.
                  • After heat treatment, Bright Dimensional Warping makes it necessary to finish the device twice.
                  • It is risky to make major changes near the end of manufacturing.
