          How Our Team at Tops Precision Controls Each Machining Step

          Our camshaft machining process is divided into obvious stages. Each stage serves a purpose. None of the steps is skipped or rushed. This is how we ensure our strict quality and consistency.

          Initial Roughing

          We start by rough-turning the camshaft. This eliminates most of the excess material. We manufacture the bearing journals, gear ends, cam lobes, and other critical sections. The idea is to get the shape close without going to the final size.

          At this point in the process (during rough machining), we don’t cut the part to the final size yet. We intentionally leave a little extra material on the camshaft.

          The part is inspected before it goes forward. That includes runout and general alignment. If something is wrong, it is fixed before the next setting.

          Semi-Finishing Operations

          Semi-finishing typically includes an early grinding step. This moves the cam lobes and other features closer to their final shape. It is also useful to relieve stress remaining from rough turning.

          At this point, we are not going after final tolerances. We are preparing the profiles and surfaces to finish grinding. The machines remove a small amount of material to smooth out the earlier cuts. This step is necessary for proper stability. It eliminates the heat distortion and ensures the part will not move or warp.

          Finish Grinding and Final Work

          Here is the final size of the camshaft. The machines are prepared for fine-tolerance work. Cam profiles are machined to the exact lift and timing values. We utilize correct wheels and speeds to keep the part cool and prevent any burn or warping.

          When the grinding is completed, the journals and lobes are polished. This provides the proper surface for oil flow and wear resistance. It also minimizes noise and friction, allowing efficient engine working.

            Grinding Equipment

            We operate cam grinders with controls, and our machines keep the shaft and wheel synchronized. Speed, feed, and pressure are tightly controlled.

            We generally use hard wheels such as CBN. These are well-formed and work cleanly. We also check the proper flow of coolant. This prevents heat-related problems and provides a neat finish.

            Each machine is inspected regularly as part of our SOPs. We do not wait for things to fail. If something is out of kilter, we service or replace it before it becomes a problem.

            Quality Control and Checks

            Quality is not an afterthought at our facility. Every step is quality-controlled before the part progresses. These measures include runout, diameter, and profile shape checks.

            Final inspections include cam lift, journal size, and surface finish. We understand the nature of a good camshaft and what it requires to function. If a part fails, it’s sorted, not shipped.
